Red Light Devisement

We did our first longer piece of devisment today. It got off to a bit of a rough start because we could not stop talking and we weren’t actually doing anything. To start we were given a piece of stimulus and it was a couple of words. Initially we just talked and talked about a bunch of ideas and things we could do. This was helpful at first but there gets to be a point where we actually needed to start trying the ideas we were suggesting. Once we started to move and try things so many more ideas were flowing and we began to create something entirely different from what we started with. We decided to have one central person and for the rest of the people to be more of an ensemble that was crowded around the central person. We were all saying a few words from the stimulus and each person chose something that stuck out to them to say. This was cool because we each got to take the part of the stimulus that was most important to us. We started to play around with volume and would go from whispering to yelling.
This was a very cool experience and it taught me a lot about devising. It was cool to see how as the class went on, we gained a lot more trust in each other and were able to continue through the piece and take each other’s lead and move as one. Once we added the red lights to this it brought everything together and gave it such a creepy feel. It was very surreal to be a part of and have it feel so cohesive and put together without blocking or a script.
