In this criterion I really got to look at how this research presentation has affected me and what I have learned from it. I was able to reflect on how I have grown as a learner and gotten better at researching. I also learned a lot about time management through this project. Having it split up into different criteria and each one having a different due date drastically helped me with my time management. I am usually a huge procrastinator and through doing this project I learned that splitting up big projects into smaller, more manageable parts is something that helps me with my procrastination. Doing this project also made me reflect on past plays I have been in and it really opened my eyes to how Victorian Melodrama appears in theater today. I thought a lot about Peter and the Starcatcher and how Black Stache is a lot like the villain stock character and how Smee is a lot like the Villain’s Accomplice. I think that this is something really interesting to look into because knowing this would have really helped the actors shape their movements.
Additionally, in this criteria I compared Victorian Melodrama to another world theater tradition. I chose to compare Victorian Melodrama to Commedia Dell’Arte. I specifically looked at Pantelone and the Villain. It was interesting to see how so many of their movements are similar but for very different reasons concerning their character traits. For example, the villain moves the way he does because he is evil and is motivated by the path that does the most harm. However Pantelone is not inherently evil, he is greedy and a slave to money and that is what his movements are motivated by.
